One of the scariest collections of short stories I’ve ever read

I just finished Never Whistle at Night 2 and I can’t recommend it highly enough! Spooky books for spooky times. If you’re wishing Halloween could come...Show more

So before I get into this review, I have to tell you a little secret. I haven't actually read Never Whistle at Night. Sorry! I own it! It's on my shelf and I mean to get to it at some point, but it just hasn't happened yet. HOWEVER! I HAVE read Back for Blood: Never Whistle at Night Part 2 and it is EXCELLENT!

If you are unfamiliar with the series, the first NWAN book is a collection of short stories (specifically horror stories) from Native American authors. I have heard nothing but rave reviews from my friends who have read it, so when I saw that the sequel was available on NetGalley, I jumped on it immediately. Boy am I glad I did!

It may be the middle of summer, but dropping into these horror stories was an absolute delight. The nice thing about a short story collection is that you get to sample the writing of a bunch of different authors at once. Having read this collection, I now have a whole list of people that I need to go check out. With that said, short story collections are also a little bit of a mixed bag, so your mileage may vary on which ones you like and don't like. That is part of the fun!

There is such a variety here. Stories that feature heavy social commentary, stories that are gory and gross, and ones that are just a plain good time. I don't really want to spoil too much here, especially since these are all relatively short endeavors and to say too much about them might ruin the surprise. To keep it brief, the following short stories in the collection were my favorite:

  • Miss Cherokee Princess 1996 by Jessica Doe

  • Civilized by A.J. Eversole

  • Guest Account by Alicia Elliot

  • Summer Vacation by Billy Ray Belcourt

I found almost all of the stories at the very least a good read, but these ones were the ones that will stick with me from the collection. If you're into horror, this is a can't miss collection.
